Profile | The Lava Experiments

The basement venue the 13th Note has played host to so many different bands over the years that you would be forgiven for thinking you had heard it all before. Funny how an impromptu visit to watch a few of those bands play live back in early 2007 could prove such sentiments to be dramatically wrong.

Fraser Rowan is the musical driving force behind The Lava Experiments. A prolific writer, he has produced a huge amount of music over the last 5 years from lush ambient soundscapes to shoegaze/post rock 'wall of sound' epics.

His debut release as The Lava Experiments was the DIY album 'Wavelength' in 2006. This was followed in the same year with the digital EP entitled 'Solar' which was released on Herb Recordings.

In 2007, Fraser took The Lava Experiments sound out of the studio to play a series of live gigs. Initial appearances featured a solo Fraser on guitar and vocals (flanked by a trusty Macbook), but the line up has since developed to accommodate for live bass.

Whilst certain comparisons have been drawn to the likes of Eno, Caribou, Spiritualised, and Ulrich Schnauss, it is also true that no-one sounds quite like The Lava Experiments. With a writing process that centres around the repetition and expansion of sounds and melody, Fraser is putting best foot forward on the path of sonic evolution.
