Yuko Shiina was born in Okawa, Kochi in 1975. The youngest daughter of a large farming family she spent her early years with her brothers and sisters in the greenery of the surrounding countryside.
Her love for music began at a young age. The distant melodies of instruments and song could often be heard wandering in the air from her village to the fields where she played. This was the sound of Yuko's childhood. For her 6th birthday, she received a small Den-Den Daiko. Intrigued by the rhythms and sounds she could make, Yuko played with the pellet drum until the beaters fell off. Seeing just how happy the toy drum had made his daughter, Yuko's father would eventually pass down his much-loved Shamisen. The 3 stringed instrument was the beginning of her musical development. When her father passed away in 1992, 17 year old Yuko would leave the family home to live with her aunt in the sprawling metropolis of Shinjuku, Tokyo. The contrasts between Yuko's country upbringing and her new life in the city couldn't have been any more defined. Culture shock aside, the cutting edge music, fashion and technology of Toyko was her new found inspiration. This would become the creative catalyst for Yuko to put her own musical fingerprint on the world. Not one to forget her roots, the past is hugely important to Yuko and this is clearly reflected in her music. Taking influence from Okawa and Tokyo in equal measure, Yuko makes her own unique brand of experimental music with a distinctly Japanese edge. Yuko debuts 'Walking With Ghosts' on Feb 22nd. |
